Imposter word game

One secret word. One player who has a different one. Everyone describes their word in a single word, then argues about who does not belong.

What is an imposter word game? It is a party game where every player secretly sees the same word except one - the imposter. Players take turns describing their word with one word each, then discuss and vote on who is faking. It needs 3 or more players, one phone, and about five minutes per round.

How a round works

  1. Pass one phone around the group. Everyone taps the card once and sees their word.
  2. Most players see the same secret word. One player sees a different one.
  3. Go round the circle. Each player says one word that describes theirs.
  4. Talk it out. Whose clue did not quite fit?
  5. Vote, then reveal who had the odd word.

A full round takes three to five minutes, which is why groups tend to play six in a row rather than one. The full rules are here.

Why word pairs beat "you are the imposter"

Most imposter apps hand one player a card reading "IMPOSTER". They know, so they bluff on purpose and the rest of the table hunts for someone acting nervous.

A word-pair game works differently. The imposter gets a real word - Lion when everyone else has Tiger - and is told nothing. Their clues are honest, so there is no tell to spot. You have to actually listen to the words.

What makes a good word pair

The pair has to be close enough that a one-word clue could plausibly describe either, but far enough apart that clues eventually diverge. Some examples from Bluffle's packs:

Synonyms are useless: if the pair is Sea / Ocean, the imposter is never caught. Unrelated words are just as bad, because the imposter is caught on turn one.

Playing in your own language

Translated word packs feel wrong. Bluffle's packs are written natively per language - Norwegian players get Lefse / Lompe, Japanese players get 寿司 / 刺身, Turkish players get Simit / Poğaça. That is 5,051 pairs across 33 languages, not one English list run through a translator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play the imposter word game?

Pass one phone around a group of 3 or more. Everyone taps to see a secret word, but one player gets a different word. Take turns saying one word that describes yours, then discuss and vote on who the imposter is.

Can I play the imposter word game for free online?

Yes. Bluffle runs free in any browser at bluffle.app with no signup, no download and no account. There are also free iPhone and Android apps if you want to play with no internet at all.

How many players do you need?

Three at minimum. Five to eight is the sweet spot. Bluffle supports up to 12 players on one device and up to four imposters in larger groups.

What is a good imposter word list?

Good pairs are similar but distinguishable, like Sea and Lake or Lion and Tiger. Avoid synonyms, which are impossible to catch, and unrelated words, which are caught immediately.
